The Experiential Education (EE) course at Huanui College is mandatory for all junior students and aims to balance the College’s high academic expectations with a curriculum dedicated to student well-being. Experiential Education is a student centred approach to learning that involves hands-on activities, real-life experiences, and reflective practice. Experiential Education aims to provide students with valuable learning experiences that help them to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills enabling students to become more engaged, motivated, and reflective learners.

The EE programme is guided by current, succinct research which supports the use of tactile, sensory rich outdoor settings to encourage diverse cognitive pathways in the brain, the retention of learning, as well as an affinity for the natural environment.

The course uses a blend of traditional Outdoor Education activities and Adventure Based Learning activities alongside contemporary health approaches to teach skills that students can then reflect upon and apply to their individual situations.

The Concepts covered in the EE course includes but is not limited to Problem-solving, Critical Thinking, Communication, Leadership, Decision Making, Interpersonal Skills, Creativity, Self-Awareness, Social and Cultural Competence, Trust, Teamwork, Resilience, Empathy and Responsibility.
