This course is built around four Big Ideas: Te Tika o te Reo (Language Accuracy), Te Rere o te Reo (Language Fluency), Te Māori o te Reo (Cultural Integrity of the Language), and Te Ora o te Reo (Language Vitality). Students develop communicative skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing, with emphasis on accuracy, fluency and cultural integrity in familiar contexts. A key focus is contributing to the revitalisation of Te Reo Māori.

Students are assessed on their ability to interact in spoken reo Māori to share and respond to information, ideas and opinions; communicate in relation to a language vitality context; demonstrate understanding of te reo Māori and its principles in familiar contexts; and write about familiar contexts.
