YEARS 10 and 11

IGCSE Level Mathematics

Our curriculum is structured to cater to students’ individual needs, offering three tiers of study: Core, Core/Extended, and Advanced. The Core content targets grades C-G, providing a solid foundation for all learners. The Extended content is aimed at grades A*-D, offering additional depth and challenge. For those seeking an extra challenge, our Advanced content targets grades A*-A and covers the Extended content and beyond, preparing students for top grades in A-level Mathematics.

Our differentiated approach ensures that students are appropriately challenged and supported based on their abilities. Depending on their readiness and aptitude, students will be directed into either the Core, Core/Extended, or Advanced course in Year 9, Year 10, or

Year 11.

While Mathematics is compulsory in Year 11, students can choose their educational path beyond this point. Those in the Advanced Mathematics curriculum who are prepared to work hard can opt to study AS Level Mathematics in Year 12, furthering their mathematical journey. Students in the Core/Extended class will find AS Level Mathematics challenging, even with grades A*-A; admission will be at the discretion of the Curriculum Leader.

*Meeting numeracy requirements for University Entrance (Standard admission) necessitates achieving a grade of D or higher in IGCSE Mathematics from either the Core or Extended External Examination.

IGCSE LEVEL

CORE MATHEMATICS

Candidates will explore topics including Number, Algebra, Shape and Space, Probability and Statistics, Graphs, Geometry, Coordinate Geometry, Mensuration, Trigonometry, Vectors, and Transformations. The purpose of this course is to provide a Mathematics programme that will develop in students a variety of mathematical tools, skills, understandings, and attitudes that will help them negotiate the complexities of real life and provide them with skills required for the working world.

The highest grade a candidate following the Core curriculum can achieve is a C in their external examinations (Grades available: C-G). In May/June, Core students will sit their External Examinations.

After this course, if students gain a C or D grade, they have achieved the University Entrance requirement. There are no further pathways in Mathematics from IGCSE Core Mathematics. However, if their grade is below a D, students will be asked to resit the IGCSE Core Mathematics examination following a discussion with the Curriculum Leader of Mathematics or Careers Advisor.
