AS Level Physical Education

Pre-requisite: students must be participating in at least one competitive sport during the year.


Physical Education at AS Level can be picked up without having had to complete IGCSE Physical Education. This advanced Physical Education course covers three modules. This is not a soft option. It is an A level Paper.


Students will continue to develop their knowledge and understanding through a variety of theory and practical learning activities. This course has both an internal coursework (two sports) practical component (50%) and an end-of-year examination (50%).


The Course is divided into four main areas.


  • Applied anatomy, exercise physiology and biomechanics provide an in-depth study of the human body systems that are integral to physical performance

  • Skill acquisition: Learners will be able to critically evaluate and apply models, theories and concepts of skill acquisition to specific sporting situations

  • Sociocultural influences: An understanding of the sociocultural concepts of sport and Physical Education is essential to have an appreciation of the role of physical activity in society

  • Performance in two physical activities requiring the use of a range of skills, techniques, tactics and strategies to improve and refine performance


Physical Activities available include:

Association football, Badminton, Basketball, Competitive swimming, Cricket, Cross-country running, Field hockey, Goalball, Netball, Olympic weightlifting, Rugby union, Squash, Table tennis, Tennis, Track and field athletics, Volleyball
