Pure Mathematics 1 and Probability & Statistics 1

Prerequisites: IIGCSE Mathematics (A or A* grade, or at the discretion of the Curriculum Leader)

Historic performance data indicates that students who have achieved an A or A* grade in IGCSE Mathematics and have a strong command of algebra are best positioned for success at AS Level. For this reason, an A or A* grade is strongly recommended for entrance to this course. Students who have not attained this level should consult with the Curriculum Leader of Mathematics before deciding whether to select this course. Students must demonstrate a strong commitment and clear academic potential. This course is significantly more demanding than IGCSE Mathematics, and given the limited time available to address gaps in understanding, opportunities for remedial work are minimal.

AS Mathematics students study both Pure Mathematics and Statistics. This course is academically demanding and requires natural ability and a willingness to learn and practise new concepts and techniques. The pace at which the syllabus is covered is much faster than IGCSE and requires at least 1 hour daily. Students should have a genuine interest in Mathematics, a growth mindset, and a strong commitment to completing assigned tasks.

This course is externally assessed, 50% towards A Level.

The Pure Mathematics 1 examination is 1 hour 55 minutes and worth 75 marks. It consists of 10 to 12 structured questions based on the Pure Mathematics 1 subject content.

The Probability & Statistics 1 examination is 1 hour 15 minutes and worth 50 marks. It comprises 6 to 8 structured questions based on the Probability & Statistics 1 subject content.

At AS Level, Pure Mathematics 1 is worth 60% of the mark, while Probability & Statistics 1 is worth 40%. 50% of the AS mark is combined with 50% of the A2 Level for a final A-level qualification.
