Prerequisites: Grade C or above in Art & Design at IGCSE, or at the discretion of the Curriculum Leader.

AS Art and Design develops students’ ability to research, develop, refine, and present a personal response in line with Cambridge Assessment Objectives. Students also have the opportunity to specialise in areas such as Fine Art, Graphic Communication, Three-Dimensional Design, or Fashion/Textiles, exploring the disciplines that best suit their interests.

ASSESSMENT STRUCTURE

Component 1: Coursework Folio

(Terms 1–2)

Students produce a body of practical work based on a self-selected theme. With teacher guidance, they establish a clear brief outlining their direction, sources, and intentions.

Work includes independent research, artist analysis, first-hand studies, and experimentation across a range of media. Students develop ideas, refine processes, and record observations, leading to a resolved final outcome. Students are expected to engage with real world practice, including gallery visits and practising artists.

All work is presented as a digital portfolio of approximately 20 slides showcasing around seven A2 boards plus a final outcome, supported by concise annotation.

Component 2: Examination Folio and Final Piece

(Term 3 + Examination)

Students respond to an externally set assignment, developing a personal investigation supported by practical studies.

The final outcome is completed during a 15 hour practical examination and is presented digitally alongside preparatory work.
