Prerequisites: AS Art with a grade of C or above
Component 3: Personal Investigation
A2 Art is an exciting course that culminates all the skills, knowledge, and techniques students have developed through their junior, IG and AS years, allowing them to refine their practice and take full ownership of their creative journey. Students arrive with a kete of skills and experience, enabling them to make meaningful choices, select projects they are passionate about, and develop as both learners and artists.
The Personal Investigation is a sustained, independent project forming the other 50% of their A Level grade. Students identify a theme of personal interest and, in consultation with their teacher, establish a focused brief. The investigation demonstrates their ability to research independently, develop ideas, experiment with materials, and refine outcomes.
ASSESSMENT STRUCTURE
Practical Portfolio
Students produce a cohesive body of practical work, showing exploration, experimentation, and a resolved final outcome. All work is photographed and presented digitally on approximately 20 slides, curated to a high standard.
Written Analysis (1000–1500 words)
A structured piece of writing that critically reflects on the student’s process, influences, and development, supporting and enhancing the practical portfolio.
Students are expected to engage with first-hand research, including gallery visits, practising artists, and other real-world contexts. Written context may be embedded within the slides or submitted separately, but is always included alongside the visual work. Opportunities for field trips and artist engagement are offered throughout the year.
The course encourages students to make
cross-curricular connections, linking their Art practice to their interests that might include Science, Psychology, Literature, Digital Media, and other subjects, helping them develop as versatile thinkers and creators. The final submission needs to demonstrate a coherent, personal response, underpinned by critical understanding, technical skill, and confident presentation of both visual and written work.
There is no examination for A2 Art, all work must be submitted to the teacher digitally by the deadline in October.
